The English Major Programme, Department of English

The English Department of the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures of the University of Bucharest is one of the most prestigious in the country, offering a dual degree in English Major and another foreign language of the student’s choice. In the last years the department has enlarged substantially and become extremely dynamic due to the ever-growing number of students and multifarious programmes of study. Being trained at reputed universities from all over the world, let alone UK, the teaching staff provides core courses in English literature, culture and civilization, concepts of modern linguistics, the structure of the English language, key concepts in literary theory and comparative literature, as well as a wide array of highly interdisciplinary elective courses. In addition, the programme focuses on the practice of English, a crucial teaching component that furthers the applicative study of the language, including vocabulary, grammar, communication, translation and academic writing skills. Students majoring in English also benefit from professional internship and research methodology guidelines on how to write a good graduation paper. Renowned UK scholars have long been a familiar presence at the conferences and workshops held by the department, where both staff and students can actively get involved in a constructive dialogue meant to redefine Britishness today.

The English Department has built strong connections with many European universities which provide opportunities for studying abroad through Erasmus scholarships during the first and second year of study (see http://lls.unibuc.ro/erasmus/). Furthermore, the annual student conference is an exciting event where students of English can share their ideas and work with students of other literature and language programmes provided by the faculty.

Students who have graduated from the English Major Programme are currently employed as teachers, editors, translators, literary critics, cultural analysts, writers, journalists, cultural attachés, etc. Lots of graduates also work for corporations such as HP, Oracle, Accenture, GFK, Millward Brown Romania.

Foreign students are strongly encouraged to enrol in the English Major programme at the Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures of the University of Bucharest. It is a wonderful opportunity for them to deepen their theoretical and applicative knowledge of the latest interdisciplinary approaches to English literature and culture, to gain expertise in key concepts of both literary theory and theoretical and comparative linguistics, to substantially improve their command of English and, last but not least, to engage in extracurricular activities. They may thus find their place and make their voice heard within a department open to cultural diversity.
